Protect your Plants from Sunburn

The Australian sun can be a harsh environment. Over the next few days we will be hit with extreme temperatures that may sunburn our treasured garden plants. Here are some tips on how to protect your plants this summer.

Garden Clinic Tips:

  • Make sure everything is watered thoroughly in the morning or evening prior to a hot day.
  • Use a wetting agent such as Eco-Hydrate or Seasol Super Soil Wetter to get your soil or potting mix to not only take the moisture in more effectively, but also retain it.
  • Move smaller pot plants to a shaded position.
  • Spray foliage the evening before with Droughtsheild, which is like a sunscreen for plants. One application will last approximately 2 weeks. It is also useful against frost and windburn damage.
  • Erect shade protection for large pots or plants in the garden out of shade cloth or any other suitable material.
  • Do not spray on hot days, especially with oil-based products.
  • Mulching as always is beneficial during hot weather.
  • Do not hedge or cut-back hard any plants when hot weather is expected.
