Rose Rosette Disease is spreading like a plague in America, becoming an increasing threat to ornamental roses in the eastern half of the country. It is a virus-like disease that causes a 'broom-like' proliferation of pale contorted new growth to emerge from a single cane. RRD also distorts flower colour and can eventually kill the affected plant. Spread by mites, propagation and the sale of infected material, no variety is immune. It is not known whether RRD is in Australia as yet, or whether our mites can transmit the disease, but we must be vigilant.
