Soft Brown and White Wax Scale

Soft Brown Scale
This variety of Scale grows to around 5mm in length, is soft and slightly oval in shape. They are usually a pale yellowish-brown but can be dark brown or tinged with green. Scales concentrate on leafstalks and mid-ribs but can be found elsewhere. They attack a wide range of plants including citrus, pears, peaches, plums, oleanders, ferns, daphne, grapes, figs, passionfruit, palms, olives and camellias.

White Wax Scale
These giants can reach 10mm in length and 7mm in height when mature, all these large white scales are female and can lay around 1000 bright pink eggs each. Plants attacked include Gardenias, waxflowers, barberries, bay trees and citrus.

Control
Spraying regularly with Pestoil or Eco-Oil will reduce the incidence of these pest, but once they have matured will have limited effect. Spray with Confidor or Maxguard which are systemic insecticides meaning as the scales suck on the plant, they will consume the insecticide. The black sooty mould will disappear in time.
