One of the most common questions we are asked at The Garden Clinic is "What can I plant in the shade?". Lucky for us there are loads of great plants for shady areas and the questions are easy to answer. It gets a little harder when the question is "Which native plants can i grow in the shade?". Our climate has seen that most of our native flora prefer full sun, but there are still a few which will grow well in the shade. Here are a few....
1 -Native Violet (Viola hederacea) - A hardy ground cover which will grow in full shade and provide some much needed colour to the darkest corner of the yard.
2 - Native Fuchsia (Correa sp.) - One of our favourite natives, the Correa comes in many different colours and sizes, perfect to grow under the shad of gum trees.
3 - Boronia - The most beautiful smelling flowers, excellent drainage is a must.
4 -Happy Wanderer (Hardenbergia violaceae) - This scrambling climber is great to plant amongst other low growing plants and flowering shrubs. Comes in purple white or pink.
5 -Ferns - Of course ferns will grow in shade, but did you know these varieties were native? a) Birds nest fern (Asplenium australasicum) b) Soft Tree Fern (Dicksonia antarctica) c) Rough Tree Fern (Cyathea australis) d) Hares foot fern (Davallia solida)
*There are other natives which will tolerate part shade and dappled shade we've listed a few more below. - Westringia - Thryptomene - Waratah - Hymenosporum - Flannel flowers - Dianella
