Alyogyne hugelii

Hibiscus flowers are one of the most stunning on the planet.
Their large, elegant flowers have been iconic of the pacific islands and other tropical locations for years.

If you are looking for a plant for your garden which is a bit more unique, why not try an Alyogyne.
Alyogyne hugelii 'West Coast Gem' is an Australian native hibiscus.
The vibrant, purple flowers are held up proudly by strong shrubby branches, with attractive green foliage.
As the name suggests 'West Coast Gem' is a native to Western Australia,
but it is quite happy to live on the East Coast.
Flowering begins in August and may continue through until Christmas.
Flowers are short lived (a day or two) but they are so prolific you will hardly notice.

Alyogyne can grow up to 2.5m in height, but can be kept neat and compact with an annual pruning.
Like many plants from the West Coast, they do like a very well drained soil and prefer full sun,
however they will tolerate part shade. Applying a native fertilizer, (slow release and liquid) will
ensure strong growth and an abundance of flowers in Spring.
Prune back long branches at the end of Summer to keep the plant neat, being
mindful not to cut too far into the old wood.

Like their foreign relatives Alyogyne are prone to Hibiscus Beetle attacks!
Use a preventative treatment when the weather warms up to avoid an infestation.
Avoid over watering an you should have many years of enjoyment from another one of Australia's very own treasures
