Description: Flowering in the sandstone country around Sydney, the giant stalks are up to 5m tall with deep blood red / dark pink bracts making this one of the most spectacular Australian flowering plants available.
This giant has rosette forming leaves, broad, green, up to 2.5 metres long and ten centimetres wide. The flower head is a cluster of bright red flowers each 10cm across, occurring at the apex of the 5m stem.
Flowering occurs in spring. Flowers, tall stalk and foliage are all features of this eye-catching plant.
Native to: The Gymea Lily is mainly confined to the Sydney region, but does occur throughout NSW.
Doryanthes excelsa is becoming a popular landscaping plant due to its eye-catching form and tall flower. It is grown commercially for cut flowers and foliage.
Culture: Good as a specimen plant it needs well-drained soil and full sunshine. The flowers are frost tender but not the foliage.
Propagate from seed and be patient for it may take 5 to 10 years for plants to flower.
