Ivory Curl Tree
Patriotically it puts on a fine floral show for Australia Day with long elegant ivory spires decorate the bush profusely and attract moths and honeyeaters. Interesting woody fruits are produced to entice the rosella. Indigenous to forests in the coastal ranges of Queensland, this beautiful small tree or large shrub has long curly cream flowers (similar to grevillea). Fire retardant leaves with glorious ivory flowers this large shrub attracts birds and bees.

Flowers:
The flowers are sweetly fragrant, grow to 20cm long and bloom from Australia Day to late summer.

Leaves:
The leaves are shiny and light green, new growth is tinged with pink.

Form:
These shrubs grow as a street tree or garden specimen in warm parts of Australia; they are particularly good in Sydney. When planted as a street tree they will never have to be pruned.

How to grow:
Buckinghamia grows best in well-drained soils with lots of organic matter added. Give it a warm, sunny spot and water regularly for the six weeks it takes to establish. Protect young trees from frost. Fertilise with controlled release fertiliser for Australian plants during the growing season.

Pruning:
It is advisable not to prune the Buckinghamia but some gardeners like to prune off the lower branches (this is called crown lifting) so you can walk under them.

Size:
3m tall and 3m wide. Buckinghamia grows fast, approximately 0.5m each year then fills out.
