Kangaroo Paw (Anigozanthos) For colour in a native garden you can not go past Kangaroo Paws to add a colourful bit of pizzazz. There have been a great deal of work in breeding these iconic plants to improve both their disease resistance (such as ink-spot disease) and colour ranges. Breeding has also developed distinct categories of Kangaroo Paws with different applications. The 'Bush Gems Lanscaper' series are extremely hardy, tall growing and seasonal flowering while the 'Bush Gems' series are more suited to pots, flower all year round and have a huge colour range.
Care Kangaroo paws love full sun, but they will tolerate some shade. Excellent drainage is important, which is why they do so well in pots, use a good quality native potting mix for best results. Apply a slow release fertiliser twice a year, preferably native and use a liquid fertiliser every month or so through spring, summer and autumn. A native liquid fertiliser is not necessary, thrive, powerfeed, maxicrop or harvest will do. Remove spent flower heads by cutting the entire fan of leaves out at the base, this will encourage new flowers to take their place. It is also a good idea to cut the foliage right back almost to ground level after winter, this may seem harsh but they will come back strong and clean. Try not to water in the evening, water in the morning if you can, wet foliage over night can contribute to ink spot disease.
