Description: One species of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is found through tropical Australia. Round leaves on long stalks are held high above the water. Showy fragrant flowers also borne on long stalks come in pink and white to 30cm across. These are followed by decorative flat-topped seed heads. Roots, stalks and seed heads are all edible.
Position: In warm tropical gardens, lotus will grow in outdoor ponds. In cool-temperate climate, plant them in shallow water or in tubs. Lotus grow best in calm water in full sun.
Care: Plant the rhizome into a basket or a bed of rich, heavy soil mix. Propagate by division of the rhizome or from seed.
