What has flame red flowers, lives in the mountains and along the coast, and turns into a horned devil in winter? The Mountain Devil - a small native shrub to 1m. This shrub has stiff leaves and stunning red flowers like a v shaped tube. Flowers are nectar filled and bring in the birds. Flowers spring and summer. This plant may be hard to establish but will prefer well drained soils and protection from full sun.
After flowering the seed capsule forms, it looks like a two-horned fruiting capsule, which the common name 'Mountain Devil' is derived. However this plant is not confined to the Blue Mountains but can be found right down to the coast and beach.
Tolerant of frosts and salt winds.
Look out for a yellow flowering species called Lambertia inermis (pictured).
