Banana crops survived floods, but not cyclone Banana prices could skyrocket to $15 a kilogram after %75 of Australia's crop was decimated by cyclone Yasi. Banana farmers were counting their lucky stars when their crops came through basically unscathed in the QLD floods, this time they weren't so lucky.
The industry is facing a huge struggle, both personal and financial as crop insurance is not available for banana farms. We can expect to see a lot of storm damaged fruit, which may look a bit odd, but will taste the same.
A spokesman for Woolworths, said the supermarket was not considering importing bananas to meet the demand at this stage. It has been reported that many farmers took the drastic measure of cutting their banana trees in half before the cyclone hit. This stops them being blown over, while their production will be delayed for a period, the crops will not have to be re-planted.
