There is no doubt that Brendan Moar designs beautiful gardens. I must confess I adore them, they stand out from the crowd and he manages to create a place that you never want to leave. His gardens are cutting edge and timeless, inspired by the surrounding landspace, landform and environment and intimitely relate to the owner's lifestyle and passions. This ability is pretty rare and the result is a creation of a unique garden with an intrinsic sense of place. His gardens were designed as part of a garden design series on the Lifestyle channel, called Dry Spell Gardening. There are around 15 of Brendan Moar's 'Dry Spell Gardens' in Australia. Visiting them has been impossible until this year when as part of the Australian Open Garden Scheme, they are opening their doors to us! The first one to open is a dry spell garden situated on the Yass plains, 280 kms south west of Sydney. It is stunning modern garden created one year ago during a really hot spell in temperatures in excess of 40 degrees. This didn't stop the dry spell team, who carved out this garden from granite boulders to create a simply beautiful place. A year on and the garden has grown into itself. You'll see a range of Australian plants in peak condition, a massive steel pergola that can move depending on the prevailing winds, a sunken garden & a series of low walls that separate the garden from the paddocks behind - you will even see Brendan himself! If you want to be inspired, then take a road trip this weekend. Address: 760 Nanima Rd, Spring Range (near Yass) Directions: Canberra UBD 9:A5. From Hall travel 4km along Barton Hwy towards Yass and turn right into Nanima Rd.
