The Hon. Gavin Jennings, Minister for Environment and Climate Change, announced today that the Australian Garden has been granted early acceptance to the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2011 in London.
The RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London is renowned as the world’s most prestigious garden exhibition. Lasting five days each May, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show features the latest horticultural trends and displays excellence in garden design. Described as ‘the Mount Everest of the gardening world’, landscape designers from around the globe compete for the chance to display their creations at Chelsea. Each year there are 157,000 visitors and 1,500 international media, along with visits from royal patrons.
“Our team includes the acclaimed landscape designer Jim Fogarty, who has won many awards at Australian and international garden shows, including at Chelsea. Jim’s design will take the Australian Garden’s theme of ‘the journey of water’ to London, which we hope will inspire people to visit Australia, with the Australian Garden at RBG Cranbourne a ‘must-see’ part of their journey,” Dr Philip Moors, Director and Chief Executive of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne said today.
“By presenting such a high quality display to an international audience there will be real tourism benefits for Victoria,” Dr Moors added. “Victoria is renowned for the quality of its diverse parks and gardens. Our display at Chelsea will give people one more reason to visit Victoria.”
The Royal Horticultural Society has given special leave to RBG Melbourne to announce that they will stage a major show garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2011. The RHS Gardens Selection Panel has approved the design of the RBG Melbourne Australian Garden so that specialised Australian plant species which have never been seen at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show can be sourced and grown in preparation for the 2011 show.
“Early acceptance to the Chelsea Flower Show is a rare honour. This demonstrates the outstanding quality of the Australian Show Garden which will be at Chelsea and also the high regard the RHS has for the team at RBG Melbourne. We are excited about this opportunity to present the multi-award-winning Australian Garden to an international audience,” Dr Moors said today.
The second and final stage of the Australian Garden will open in late 2011. The Australian Garden presents Australia’s unique flora in spectacular landscapes. Located at RBG Cranbourne, approximately 45 minutes from Melbourne, the Australian Garden has received 17 international, national and regional awards for landscape design, tourism and sustainability since it opened in 2006.
