Parky goes in to bat for Australian charity

Sir Michael Parkinson will get behind a good cause as Ambassador for the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children.

The chat show legend, who has been in Australia performing his stage show, Parky – the One Man Show, said he was delighted to take up his first role as Ambassador for an Australian charity.

"I have always had immense respect for the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children," Michael said.

"I have been impressed by the positive impact they have on the lives of children with hearing or vision loss.

"I admire the work they do. They give children hope and purpose."

Fans of Michael will be aware of his great affection for Australia and for cricket but may not realise his generous regard for and interest in the Institute, which he has supported for 30 years.

John Berryman, Chief Executive of the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children, observed that Michael refers to Australia as his second home. Rarely does a year pass without a visit down under.

"He enjoys a special place in the hearts and minds of Australians, and he will help to ensure that our charity continues to attract generous support. We are one of Australia's oldest charities and next year we will celebrate our 150th anniversary."

In 1983, Michael created a mascot for the Institute known as "Rockie Woofit", an Australian version of his successful UK characters "The Woofits", which featured in his children
