We've been talking about bananas a fair bit recently, with price spikes in the last few years it's a tree in the backyard is becoming a good investment. At the garden clinic our 'Dwarf Cavendish' is producing a huge bunch of Bananas for the second year in a row.
Don't be fooled into thinking you have to live in QLD to grow nice Bananas. Humphris Nursery have just brought out a range of cool climate fruiting Bananas called 'Cool Bananas'. These do need protection from frost cool winds but should produce fruit in coastal areas as far south as Melbourne.
Varieties Dwarf Cavendish - A smaller growing form of the main commercial variety, Cavendish, a heavy cropper.
Dwarf Red Dacca - Produces very sweet bananas which turn sunset colours as they ripen, going from burgundy to orange.
Ducasse - Often referred to as the sugar banana, this variety is sweet with an exquisite flavor.
Goldfinger - The main dessert banana consumed in North America. It is a heavy cropper and is cold hardy.
Lady Finger - Produces smaller fruit than most other varieties but it is very sweet and richly flavoured.
Pisang Ceylan - Produces very sweet bananas which are bright yellow when ripe.
