Peanut Update, Multi Cut Lettuce and baby vegetables
Peanuts The peanuts we planted back in early February are roaring along. They are developing heaps of little pods beneath the soil. It's really quite amazing to watch the root like structures (actually elongated pedicels) sprout out of the spent flowers and force their way underground. It's a bit too late to plant them this year, they need 5 months of warm weather to mature, but definitely give them a go next year.
Multi-Cut Lettuce (Oasis) Harvest handful after handful of crisp, fresh salad leaves with the new Multi-Cut Lettuce from Oasis. Once they reach maturity (20-25cm) the lettuce can be cut back by two thirds. Within 4-6 weeks another crop of leaves will be ready for harvest, if conditions are good its possible to get a third harvest. Not bad value for one little seedling if you ask me. Multi-Cut lettuce are available with red or green leaves.
Broccoli Bambino (Oasis) Mini Bambino Broccoli is a fantastic variety with edible stems and a long harvest period. When the first floret is the size of a 10cent piece it should be removed with its first 2 leaves. Side shoots will develop in around 6 weeks time, after these are harvested additional florets will continue to develop over the next 4-6 weeks.
Cabbage Mini Cannonball (Oasis) Cabbage Mini Cannonball is a small, firm, rounded, green cabbage which is tender and sweetly flavoured. Ideal for salads and stir fries. Can be harvested 11-14 weeks after planting.
Cauliflower Mini White (Oasis) Cauliflower Mini White is a fast maturing variety producing small pure white heads that are the perfect size for small gardens. Can be harvested 11-14 weeks after planting.
Spinach Mini Baby Leaf (Oasis) Spinach Mini Baby Leaf is a compact, leafy, nutritious vegetable, rich in vitamins and iron, which can be easily grown in the home garden and containers. Can be harvested 5-8 weeks after planting.
Baby Beets (Oasis) Bite sized, nutritious, dark red, round balls of flavour that can be harvested 5-6 weeks after planting. Baby Beets can be eaten raw, simply pick from the garden, peel the skin and they are ready to use.
