If you want to grow winter veggies, you need to get them in nice and early, if you want to start them from seed, you need to get in even earlier! Vegetable seedlings can be quite expensive, and when you have a fairly large area to fill it all adds up. Why not save some cash by germinating your own seeds now?
The weather is perfect for germinating seeds, the nights are fairly warm which means you should have an almost perfect germination rate.
Winter vegetables which should be sown now include:-
Cabbages Broccoli Cauliflower Kale Spinach Onions Beetroot Parsnip Leeks Shallots Spring Onions
Herbs such as Fennel Dill and Coriander are also good to sow now.
What to do?
1. Choose and buy the seeds of vegetables you want to grow. Avoid using old seeds as they may not germinate. 2. Fill some punnets or seedling trays with a seed raising mixture and moisten. I always save my punnets when i buy seedlings, and this is the reason. 3. Place the seeds on top of the seed mix and cover with some moist peat moss or vermiculite. 4. Water in very carefully with a fine rose on your watering can. You don't want big droplets smashing up your neat little punnets. 5. Keep the punnets in a warm protected place with plenty of light until they germinate, after about 2 weeks they can be moved outside. 6. Don't let the seedlings dry out, when they are this young they don't usually bounce back, once they are a suitable size they can be planted out into your garden.
