Agapanthus

Agapanthus praecox
Agapanthus have been widely used in Australian gardens for many years, and with good reason. They are tough, hardy and require virtually no additional watering once established. Agapanthus are native to Africa, and like a lot of African plants they grow very well in our climate. To me Agapanthus are always a reminder that Christmas is on its way. In late Spring to early Summer their swollen flower buds explode with colour while perched upon the tall slender stems. Flowers die down after Christmas, but their attractive strappy foliage remains green all year round.

Care
Agapanthus will tolerate most soil types and will flower in part shade or full sun. Regular watering will be required for a few weeks after planting. Once established, watering is only required in the heat of Summer or if the ground becomes extremely dry. Apply a slow release fertiliser such as Garden Gold in Spring to ensure plenty of blooms.

Large clumps of Agapanthus can be divided in Autumn through to early Spring. Trim back the foliage to just above ground level, then dig up the clump and gently shake of any excess soil. Remove any old roots then divide the clump by gently pulling apart, its a good idea to have a sharp knife handy in case the roots hold tight.

Important!
*Many councils in Victoria have banned Agapanthus, so check with yours before you go ahead and plant some.
*Always look for sterile hybrids (Black Pantha and Queen Mum are basically sterile)
*Remove spent flower heads to prevent the spread of seeds into native bushland.
*If you have a bed of white flowers with some random blue ones, dig them out and remove any seed heads to avoid random seedlings in the bed. The same goes for white flowers in beds of blue.

Troubleshooting: If plants haven't flowered for a year or two, your plants may be too crowded and you may need to lift and divide plants in autumn.
