Cape Primrose (Streptocarpus)

Cape Primrose

This spilling plant looks like an African Violet on steriods - and is much easier to grow!

Description: A great flowering houseplant for people without 'green thumbs'. There are few things more spectacular than a mature streptocarpus in full bloom. Closely related to the African Violet, but unlike violets that usually only produce one bloom stalk per leaf axil, streptocarpus will produce 6-10 bloom stalks in succession from each leaf. Each stem produces a number of flared, trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of blue, mauve, pink and white, all with striped throats. A mature plant with lots of healthy leaves can produce lots of colour!

Care: Will grow outdoors where winters are frost-free but not in full sun. Part or filtered shade is best. Over watering may cause root rot, so keep them just moist, never wet. 'Bloom boosting' high phosphorus fertilisers like GardenGold or Potash will help flowering. If you have a healthy plant, blooms will come. Streptocarpus is vigorous and needs regularly and adequate feeding through the warmer months. Remove old leaves, especially if they've already produced a number of bloom stalks.

Remove congested leaves and dead flowers at least once a week. Repot each season

Uses: As houseplants, they are well suited to hanging baskets, that can be hung in warm bright rooms, shaded balconies and courtyards.
