Caring for potted plants in wet weather
Caring for potted plants in wet weather
Pots often house our most cherished plants, and most of the time they are in pots because they need some extra drainage. Needless to say, when the soil stays drenched for days, even weeks on end things start to curl up their toes. Just like in hot dry weather, in the wet, rainy weather we need to take a few extra precautions.

Aeration
Improve aeration and allow water to flow through the soil by poking holes in the soil with a pencil.

Remove Saucers
Once the saucer underneath a pot fills up, it becomes a swimming pool, and doesn't allow water to drain away. This can cause plants to drown or develop root rot.

Changing location
If the rain doesn't seem like it's going to stop, bring some of your more sensitive plants undercover. Getting them out of the rain will allow them to dry out a little and could be the difference between a healthy plant and a dead plant.

Wheels
Large pots can be very difficult to move, especially when full of water. We have all our big pots on wheels so when the time comes we can simply roll them undercover. You can pick up these wheels from most nurseries and the large chain stores.
