Zygocactus (Schlumbergera) The Zygocactus (Schlumbergera) are commonly known as the Christmas cactus. This is because in the Northern Hemisphere they flower around Christmas time. Here in Australia we also call them the Christmas cactus, which can be confusing because down here they flower from late autumn to early spring. The original scientific name for these plants is Zygocactus but it was changed to Schlumbergera, many people will still refer to them as Zygocactus. The Zygocactus are native to South America and are epyphytic, which means they can live of the moisture in the air. Stems are made up of phylloclades (flat segments a few inches long which resemble leaves). These phylloclades are linked together to create pendulous hanging branches which is why they are often grown in hanging baskets. Flowers come in a huge range of bright colours and appear at the tips of the segmented branches.
Care Potting mix should be free draining and aerated to prevent soggy soil which may cause disease, a pH from 5.5 to 6.5 is acceptable. Zygocactus require indirect sunlight, too much sun will cause stunted growth and pale, faded phylloclades. More water is required than most succulents, water when the top of the soil is dry to the touch. A soluble fertiliser is best, this can be applied as often as very fortnight during warmer months. Feeding should cease at about a month before bud set, then water with plain water until buds appear. Pruning is recommended after flowering, remove the top one or two phylloclades with secateurs or by pulling and twisting at the joint.
Uses Due to their growth habit, Zygocactus are best suited to hanging baskets. These are not restricted to indoors but can also be grown outside hanging from trees etc.
