Moth Orchid (Phalaenopsis)
Moth orchids are exquisite flowering orchids that look like butterflies and come in white, pink, cerise and brandy colours. They are usually given as gifts they can be tricky to get to flower again. Originating in the tropical mountainous regions of New Guinea, Asia and Australia they need warm humid conditions to thrive and may need the warmth of a glasshouse or warm terrace.

Wherever you are comfortable, your phalaenopsis will be too. They need careful attention to temperature for growth and flowers. Keep moist, not wet and avoid wetting foliage, especially the central crown. In most cases watering once every 7 days is enough. A small fan to keep air moving encourages good growth. Sit your Moth orchid on a tray of pebbles to increase humidity. Make sure your pot sits above water level. Min temp 16oC should be maintained at night, maximum of 30oC in summer.

Feed with a balanced fertiliser, we suggest half strength Aquasol one week followed by half strength Thrive for flowers the next. Good light is necessary! Bring them inside whilst flowering but remember to take them back outside when they are finished.

Don't remove the finished flowering stem as the plant is likely to re-flower on that stem if still green. when the flower stem has browned off you can cut it back to ground level. Perfect for small pots, they should be left undisturbed when established.
