Pansies and Violas Pansy and Viola are both of the same genus Viola. Pansies have a large flower while the plants we refer to as Violas have a smaller flower. Pansies are one of the most popular flowering annuals and new improved varieties are released each year. Pansies and violas flower through winter, providing much needed colour in otherwise drab flower beds. Care Pansies can be grown in full sun over winter, but they do like a bit of shade through spring and summer. Soil should be rich and well drained, with rotted manure and compost added before planting. Use a liquid fertilizer and regularly remove spent flowers to encourage more. Uses Border plantings, tubs, various containers, garden beds, mixed flower beds, hanging baskets and with spring flowering bulbs.
