Sagina sabulata, also known as Irish Moss or Scotch Moss, is a low-growing prostrate perennial plant. It forms a thick, dense mat with self-rooting stems, and slender leaves around 5mm long. The flowers are white and are around 5mm in diameter and appear late spring - summer.
They relish sandy or gravel based soils and thus are ideal for rockeries but do enjoy a bit of water, especially over the heat of summer.
Originating from European regions this ground covering plant has much value in the landscape as an interest plant and moss substitute. It can also be used around stepping-stones as well as potted up to create interesting specimens by themselves.
