There are not too many plants that can survive happily in a confined pot with no fertiliser and very little moisture, but it is here the Yucca thrives!
Description: There are many species of Yucca all with bold foliage in rosettes of sword-like leaves, some with extremely sharp leaf spines. With their good form and bold foliage they make superb accent plants for a balcony or courtyard. Yucca is very hardy. Smaller species are suitable for containers. They are drought tolerant and cold hardy. Perfect for pots, inside or out.
Types: Yucca elephantipes comes from Mexico and grows to 10-15m in their natural habitat, although will grow slightly smaller in a domestic garden situation. Branching will occur above what is a very interesting swollen trunk (similar to a Ponytail Palm). Large clusters of white flowers are produced at the end of winter, usually once the plant has grown to partial maturity. They come in a green leaf and variegated leaf forms.
Yucca rigida is silver-grey with narrow leaves.
Watch out for terminal leaf spines and don't plant too close to paths for fear of pricking friends and neighbours.
