Winter Weed Treatment for Lawns

Garden Clinic Tips for a Weed-Free Lawn

As your lawn browns off with the cool of winter, now is the time that broad-leaf weeds like clover and oxalis take hold and stand out like a sore thumb being an oasis of green in a desert of brown.

Treatment of these weeds does depend on your lawn type so be sure to check any product purchased to make sure it is suitable for your particular lawn type.

Couch is a pretty easy lawn type to treat with most sprays available being suitable for this lawn type.

Buffalo lawns are generally the hardest to treat as the herbicide can have the undesired effect of killing your lawn. Here are some helpful guidelines for choosing the correct selective herbicide for Buffalo lawns:

1) Always check the herbicide for suitability with your lawn type.

2) Avoid products containing Dicamba as an ingredient (Buffalo hates this and this chemical is also more likely to affect neighboring trees to your lawn causing growth defects or possibly death). Most sprays contain a mixture of MCPA and other ingredients such as Dicamba or Bromoxinil.

3) Never use a watering can to apply herbicides. Instead use a suitable sprayer where the delivery rates can be regulated properly.

4) Spot spray if you can and try to do the job right the first time as multiple applications can cause die-back. Usually two treatments per season is fine.
