Using Echeveria glauca to plant out a wire framed bird. (Requires: 1 wire bird or any other frame, sphagnum moss, premium potting mix, suitable plants to suit)
Step 1: Obtain a wire creature of any sort for planting. These are available in various places from Garden Centres to 2-dollar shops. One that can be split open so as to access the inside planting area is ideal. Step 2: Pack the inside of the frame with the sphagnum moss so as to be sure that the potting mix will be secure once it is placed behind to form the shape (in this case a ball).
Step 3: Fill the rest with moist potting mix and firm into place. Once you have completed the two sides sandwich them together to create the whole shape. Step 4: Now is the fun part! In this instance we have used Hen and Chicken (Echeveria glauca) as our plant but experiment with anything from flower seedlings to grasses! Break Echeveria into individual plants and poke them into place. (Tip: If your plantlets do not initially take hold, hold them in place using pantyhose. Step 5: Stand back and admire your work of art. It is sure to be the item in your garden that gets the most attention and comments from visitors – hopefully favorable.
