Feburary Jobs in the Garden

  • Prepare any empty flower and vegetable beds for Autumn planting of cool season plants by digging through Soil Conditioner.
  • Check your vegetable garden for pests such as leafminer on citrus. Remove any damaged leaves and protect with fortnightly applications of Eco-Oil.
  • Be on the lookout for powdery mildew on your plants which looks like they have been lightly dusted with icing sugar. Spray if necessary with Eco-Rose which is safe for use on edible crops.
  • Lightly prune NSW Christmas bush if you have not already to mantain shape
  • Cuttings of many evergreen plants can be struck at this time. Keep them in a protected position out of the sun.
  • Remove spent seed heads of agapanthus and any other fading flowers in the garden.
  • Protect developing fruit from fruit fly with Fruit Fly trap or make your own lure with vegemite and brown sugar.
  • Clear up fallen tomatoes lying on the ground.
  • Cover fruiting fig trees with a bird net to prevent developing fruit being attacked by birds. Or put a red rubber snake in your fig tree to scare off birds.
  • Do not feed your garden in very hot weather, will place too much stress on root systems.
  • Do not use chemical sprays once temperature reaches 28 degrees, or you will burn your plants. Best time is early evening, once the sun has set.
  • Water your plants and not your garden. Give each plant a watering can full of diluted seaweed solution once a week in very hot weather.
  • Spray Hibiscus with Confidor to prevent hibiscus beetle from damaging flowers
  • Feed gardenias each month through summer with pelletised manure and water with liquid feed such as Phostrogen Acid Loving Plant Food and Tonic.
  • Prune and feed petunias for another flush.
  • Trim runaway shoots on wisteria
  • Support growing dahlias with thin bamboo stakes
  • Turn compost to accelerate the decomposition process
