Mulch everywhere this week if you haven't done so already - lightly scratch the soil surface, apply a wetting agent then top with 75-100 mm of mulch.
Stake the taller-growing tomatoes, they should be coming along nicely now - check is you have an virus and remove any yellowing leaves. Keep feeding with liquid feed such as Harvest and remember that deep-watering tomatoes and summer vegetables like capsicum and eggplant will result in better harvest and crops! Yum all the mediterranean vegies are ready to burst!
Keep on liquid feeding those delicious leafy summer herbs and greens. My rocket, lettuce, basil and dill are being using in the kitchen daily - which helps to stop them from going to seed.
There's still plenty of time to plant carrot, celery, capsicum, cucumber, radish, sweet corn, zucchini, basil, Asian greens, repeat-harvest salad greens and tomatoes. We suggest plant smaller amounts (one punnet at a time) regularly for a prolonged, summer-long harvest.
Lift, divide and divide old cymbidium orchids.
Trim azaleas lightly (back maximum by a third) and spray with Confidor®, Conquer or Pestoil® to prevent Lacebug silvering the leaves.
Check tomatoes for white fly - hang a yellow sticky board to attract white fly in the tomato patch (www.greenharvest.com.au)
Plant basil around tomatoes
Pick gardenias for vases and float bowls
Feed hibiscus.
Mulch shallow rooting plants like hibiscus, azaleas, camellias and magnolia. Use either sugarcane, lucerne or teatree mulch. Or mulch with your own compost.
Make your hydrangeas blue or pink by watering with bluring or pinking tonic. A sprinkle of garden lime will make the flowers a stronger pink colour.
Clip hedges and make cuttings out of the clippings.
Plant chillis in full sun, plant 3 varieties in a large pot and you'll have plenty of choice.
Cut off strawberry runners and plant them elsewhere. After 3 years the mother plant can be disgarded. Strawberries need rasied beds, mulch and bird netting.
Spray citrus with pest or eco oil to prevent Citrus leaf minor, which shows itself as squiggly lines in the leaves. Use Confidor to control stink bugs (bronze orange bugs).
Group herbs with similar water needs, mediteranean herbs such as rosemary, thyme, tarragon, oregano and sage all need less water than parsley, coriander, basil, chives, chervil and rocket.
Ensure all shrubs have had their spring feed.
Plant for Christmas - you've got 6-8 weeks!
Prune natives, azaleas, camellias and diosma.
Try planting sweet potato tubers, cut off bottom of tuber and root in a shallow tray of water before planting.
