Winter - June

Prune roses in temperate gardens. In cold areas with heavy frost wait until late August.

Lift perennials, divide root system with sharp spade, renovate the soil with compost or soil conditioner then replant root divisions.

Plant Bare-rotted deciduous fruit trees.

 

Plant roses, pansies, polyanthus, geranium, winter vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, cabbage, beetroot, leeks, potatoes, rhubarb, asparagus.

Plant autumn foliage trees for summer shade. We like Nyssa, Crepe Myrtles and Lipstick maples for fabulous autumn colour.

Lift dahlias, prune back stems, clean tubers, dust with Derris dust, label and store in a cool dry place.

Feed bulbs spring flowering as they start to grow.

Dead-head pansies.

Prune deciduous trees eg Crepe myrtles while dormant. Pollarding is popular in Europe to control size of large trees. Prune to the same knuckles each winter.

Compost all fallen leaves, kitchen scraps, spent prunings, grass clippings. Spread matured compost over garden beds.

Liquid feed flowers/ pansies/ polyanthus/ primulas/ sweet peas.

Feed the vegie patch with liquid manure, Harvest, and seaweed solution.

Prepare soil and beds for rose planting.

Prune olive tree into a vase shape removing the inside branches and opening up the centre to the soil and air. Prune branches back by 1/3
