Winter Jobs in the Garden for May-June

Winter is here and it is a great season for rejuvenating and tidying up. Here are a few things you can be doing this week

* Broad beans can still go in as can pod peas, sugar snap and snow peas.
* Spray frost sensitive plants with 'Drought Shield' the new name for StressGuard
* Dead head rosesbut hold off the hard prune until July-August.
* Prune back canna lilies. new shoots will emerge in spring.
* Feed the soil by digging in plenty of organic matter such as well rotted animal manures and blood and bone.
* Watch for leaf and branch wilt on daphne, grevillea and citrus. This is the deadly and dreaded root rot that is prevalent in damp periods.
Prevent root rot by spraying Anti Rot over leaves and root zone of susceptible plants!
 * Garlic can still be planted now, break apart the cloves and plant them pointed end up.
* Plant cabbages, caulis, kale and broccoli.
* Spray all members of the cabbage family with Success to rid them on cabbage moth caterpillars.
* Look out for seed potatoes in nurseries.
* Rhubarb can be planted and divided throughout winter.
* Pile up autumn leaves for use in the compost.
* Add a little lime to vegie garden beds.
* Plant interesting swollen stem vegetables such as fennel, kohlrabi and celeriac.
