August - Winter planting
* Plant herbs in the garden ready for spring. Try carpets of thyme, chives, parsley, rosemary, mint, chives, coriander, pennywort (helps treat Arthritis).

* Leafy vegies grow well when the weather is still cool. Try spinach, rainbow chard, silverbeet, rocket, and all types of lettuce. Feed with a liquid feed and you'll be harvesting the outer leaves in no time at all.

* We love growing our own potatoes. Choose one that has the flavour you like and just plant it about 20cm deep. As it grows gently mound the soil up around it so the plant produces more and more tubers. you will be able to harvest around 20kg of potatoes from just one plant! And you can leave them in the soil until you need them.

* If you can find a spot for potatoes why not try a squeeze in a sweet potato!

* Magnolias are the picture of winter and the promise of spring. There is nothing more magestic than these small trees. They come in all colours red, claret, purple, white, pink, yellow, bicoloured and in many flower shapes such as saucer, goblet, wine glasss and hour glass. There is one to suit everyone and they love Sydney's climate.

* Camellias reticulata are in full glorious flower, to say this flower is the king of camellias is an understatement. Some flowers measure over 25cm across. Their branches weep with the weight of generous blooms. Flower colours come in deep red, deep pink, candy pink and white. They are easy to grow, prefer a little sun to ripen their enormous flower buds and do well with a generous layer of mulch.
