Description Boronia heterophylla is a Western Australian native and a member of the Rutaceae family. The species is sometimes known as the Kalgan Boronia. Boronia heterophylla is a rounded, compact shrub reaching a height of 1.5 metres. The pinnate leaves are bright green. In spring, plants become covered with bright pink, fragrant, bell-shaped flowers.
Use The Kalgan Boronia can be cultivated in rockeries, native cottages gardens and containers. The species is also used as a cut flower.
Care Prune after flowering to keep the plants bushy and blooming bounteously. Propagate from cuttings.
Conditions In the garden boronia needs a cool partly shaded spot with morning sun and well drained soil. Make sure the root system is cool. A well placed slab of stone will help reflect heat. Keep it well watered but allow it to dry out between waterings. Boronias do well in pots.
Cultivars Boronia heterophylla is a hardy shrub that copes with life in eastern Australian gardens. "Carousel", "Just Margaret" and "Lipstick" are cultivars and hybrids of this attractive shrub.
