Fabulous foliage plants lift a garden from the ordinary to the exotic. Plant them in drifts, as borders and in tubs to take full advantage of their colour and texture. And lets face it flowers come and go but leaves are there every day of the year!
We like:
Black Elephant Ear (Colocasia) is good around ponds, loves the sun and needs wet feet.
Melianthus has stunning silver foliage deeply cut, grows to 2m with interesting burgundy flowers in spring. Looks great planting with white flowers such as Agapanthus, Angel's Trumpet and fuchsia.
Canna 'Australia' has almost black, fabulous dramatic foliage, best grown in large clumps and loves a sunny spot. (pictured)
Dianella 'Silver Border' with variegated cream and green striped foliage, looks good with dark background and makes good border plant.
Lomandra 'Aussie Blue Grass', a steel blue native grass that grows 45cms. Its fine texture and luminous blue colour make a striking foliage contrast.
Stonecrop (Echeveria elegans) tough drought hardy succulent with rosettes that clumps up to make a good looking garden border. Fabulous in an urn. Loves the sun or shade, very hardy. Also good is the variety 'Black Prince'.
Arum lily has handsome large white spotted glossy green foliage loves a damp spot. White flowers are a bonus.
