What to plant in January
Plant the heat loving stars of summer: Frangipani, Black Elephant Ear (Colocasia), Water Canna, Water Lily, papyrus, canna, ginger, portulaca, datura, brugmansia (Angels Trumpet). We like the Spiral Ginger (pictured), costus, because you can add the delicious yellow flowers to your salad for a lovely citrus tang!

Mandevilla 'Pink Fantasy Mini' - Miniature Mandevilla has a big flower on a smaller growing vine. All Mandevillas love the sun and flower better when trained horizontally across a wire, as the sun can get to all parts of the vine.

Leopard Lily (Belamcanda chinensis) – unusual and pretty spotted flower

Tropical flowers:
Red Flowering ginger (now in full bloom) (Hedychium greenei) – outstanding red ginger flowers and great green foliage, needs a shaded but warm position.
Ruby Ginger (Curcuma rubescens) – striking red stems and veins make this subtropical stunner a real knockout.
Dwarf Pink Frangipani (Plumeria 'Pink Petite') is perfect for a pot on a sunny balcony as are all frangipanis. Available late January.
Ziniber collinoii (pictured) has decorative orange candle-like flowers that sprout up from the soil. A great tropical plant for the collector. It likes sheltered position and semi shade.
Frangipanis - all colours, plant two in the one hole for a rainbow effect.
Black Elephant's Ears (Colocasia illustris) – an excellent foliage plant to achieve a depth of foliage contrast.
Snail Creeper - Vigna caracalla (syn. Phaseolus caracalla) – quite a special flower, of which the name doesn't do justice. The buds start white and the flowers come out lilac and mauve. This climber has an exceptional fragrance – coming into full flower now
Angel's Trumpet (Brugmansia) - stunning flowers that hang down and seen to flower forever. These are small to medium trees - simply breathtaking. Enjoy their soft fragrance throughout the night. Flowers come in apricot, white, double white, yellow and pink.


Fruit:
Edible Figs: Varieties available now include 'Black Genoa', Yellow Excel', ''White Adriatic', 'Preston's Pride' and 'Brown Turkey', delicious. We think Black Genoa is the sweetest.. but you can put them to the test. Plant in full sun and water regularly during summer.
Dwarf Citrus - 'Lotsa Lemons' only grows to 1m so is the perfect size for pots.
Dwarf Citrus - 4 varieties are available on Flying Dragon rootstock: Lemon 'Eureka', Lemon 'Meyer', Mardarin 'Imperial' & Mandarin 'Emperor' only grows to 2m. Good for pots!
Grafted Passionfruit - black, Panama Red & Panama Gold. Make sure you check for any growth below the graft and remove it.
Feijoa - some call the fruit salad fruit due to its delicious fruity taste.
