Magnolias: Deciduous magnolias make a fabulous specimen in full flower. There are many hybrids available. All of them need an open sunny space to develop their broad domed crown. Good rich soil is essential, well drained. Allow your magnolia to grow and never prunt it. The Ulan magnolia (Magnolia denudata syn M.heptapeta) has pure white goblet-shaped flowers on its bare branches that emerge from grey furry buds.
