While plants are leafless and dormant it is a good time to plant deciduous shade trees, fruit trees and roses.
Roses: Winter is the perfect time to plant roses. Buy them bare-rooted or potted. Prepare planting hole well with soil conditioner or compost. Give climbing and pillar roses a good support structure to grow on. *Check out our 'Step by step' section on how to plant bare rooted roses.
Flowers: pansies, snapdragons, stock, poppies, primula, calendula, marigolds. Pansies and violas: Colourcode your garden in spring with the many different colours of pansies and violas available. They will lift your spirits though winter and spring with their delightful faces.
Pansies: Plant pansies and violas for a wonderful spring display that will last until Christmas. One of our favourites are the 'Cutie Cat' Sapphire Pansies from Oasis - we love their cute pussy cat faces! We are planting hundreds of blue violas (Viola Baby Grand Blues) at the nursery this weekend. We have realised, over the years, that the smaller faced pansies and violas do better and last longer than the really large flowering varieties.
Be sure to remove the first buds so that your plants establish well and fertilise at planting time. Prevent fungal problems due to recent rain with a spraying of Antirot Phosacid, sprayed all over leaves.
