QUESTION:
Our Camellia ‘Star Above Star’ hedge has flowered beautifully for years. However, it struggled this autumn. It’s full of sticks and small leafless branches. Is it on its way out or is there a magic remedy to bring it back to health?
ANSWER
Your hedge has likely been stressed by drought and extreme heat, which caused excessive leaf drop. These fallen leaves, along with any older, partially decomposed leaves, can form a layer that prevents water from reaching the roots. Start by removing all leaves and any undergrowth around the plants. Apply a ring of composted cow manure, then water in with a seaweed solution. Prune any dead branchlets, feed with an organic pelletised camellia fertiliser and water again with seaweed solution. If you’re not in a cold, frosty area, you should see some recovery before winter. Repeat the process in late winter to help the hedge bounce back and produce strong flowers next season.
