QUESTION: My Japanese maple was nice and healthy green and leafy, after going away for the weekend I returned and leaves are all soft and brown, am I able to save it?
SILVANA D.V., GREENFIELD PARK, NSW
ANSWER: Potted maples are prone to drying out in hot, windy weather. To prevent this, place them on a tray of water during heatwaves, especially if you’re away.
Some tip dieback may occur. To aid recovery, thoroughly saturate the pot with a diluted seaweed solution, not fertiliser. This will support regrowth during summer and autumn, so be sure to keep the pot consistently moist.
If your plant is root-bound, consider repotting it into a larger pot during winter.
