Q: My eggplants have leathery marks on the base of the fruit. It is on them from the time they start to grow. I’ve sprayed with eco-oil, Success Ultra and BioGuano. What’s causing this scaling?
Kevin H., Oran Park, NSW
A: It is a common insect pest of azaleas, viburnums, citrus and eggplants. The two spotted mite or lacebug, is the culprit. As with all lacebug control, constant checking of fruit or leaves for the first signs of infestation is critical. With your eggplants you need to inspect marble sized fruit for the tiny, winged insect. It is important to treat fruit early with a repeat spray of any organic soap such as Yates Nature’s Way Vegie and Herb or Multicrop's Ecobug Organic.
