FAQ: Rosy outlook

Q:
I recently visited a garden that was full of this gorgeous rose, it was in full flower and spreading everywhere. The owner wasn’t sure of its name and just called it Anna after the lady who gave her the original cutting. Julie A., Bowral, NSW

A: It is a polyantha rose known as ‘The Fairy’, an absolute staple of many spring gardens but repeats flowering right through summer into autumn. It spreads as a groundcover and may need to be curtailed if necessary. Released in the UK in 1932 by rose breeder J.A. Bentall, it has remained very popular around the world ever since. It is easily grown from cuttings as your garden friend noted.
