Get the Blooms Going

QUESTION
: I’ve been given a hoya in flower but have never grown them before. Are there any tricks with this amazing climber?

ANNE M, GOLD COAST, QLD

ANSWER
: Hoyas like to pot bound, so you can keep them in your terracotta pot for many years. They are also not overly fussy as to soil, provided it's well-drained, as I’ve seen this native climber rambling around rocks on the shoreline of Hinchinbrook Island, Queensland.

They are just as happy climbing up a trellis as they are hanging from a basket. Mine have responded positively to feeding with Neutrog’s Strikeback for Orchids throughout the growing season.

Avoid pruning off the flower spikes, as they’ll continue to produce those beautiful porcelain-like blooms for you on the same spikes each year.
