How to grow Calla Lilies (Zantedeschia) at home

Question:

These flowers were plantedin the main street of Tenterfield, NSW. Can you tell me what they are and how to grow them myself?

Answer:

They are calla lilies, related to arum lilies (Zantedeschia elliotiana), a bulbous perennial from South Africa. Many modern hybrids are available, with spotted leave sand flowers in striking colours, from nurseries such as Tesselaars or Van Diemens Quality Bulbs. This one is called Z. ‘Picasso’. The flowers perform well in pots or in the garden and make excellent cut flowers, which is why they are popular with florists. They prefer moist but well-drained soil and should be protected from hot, dry summer winds, ideally in a semi-shaded spot.
