Lily Lover

Q:
I’m a new gardener inspired by your lovely magazine to try lilies. Should I plant them in the garden or in pots?

A: Lilies thrive in both pots and gardens; compact varieties are particularly well-suited to pots. Winter is the season to plant the bulbs. Choose a spot with filtered sunlight and well-drained soil, and enrich with well-rotted cow manure or compost. If your soil is heavy, incorporate grit or pumice to assist with drainage.

Plant bulbs deep 20cm deep and 10cm apart. Water in well and keep them just moist through their growing period. Sprinkle snail pellets around the emerging shoots, and place a small stake (with labels) to mark them. Lilies will flower every year if you feed them with bulb food as they grow and again after flowering. For options, visit vdqbulbs.com.au to view and order from their catalogue.
