Mystery Solved

QUESTION: Many years ago in Queensland, I had a stunning blue flowering creeper. It had a slightly wild appearance but when it bloomed, it captivated everyone who passed by. I never learned its name but its star-like flowers formed clusters reminiscent of small wisteria blooms. Do you have any idea what it might be? ANGELA L, PORT MACQUARIE, NS

ANSWER: I’m confident that it is Petrea volubilis, commonly knownas the purple queen’s wreath, featuring single, star-shaped flowers. There's also a newer variety, P.kohautiana ‘Purple Passion,’ which boasts larger, double flowers that start out blue and develop rich purple centres. While still quite vigorous, it thrives in our warm climate garden, adapting well from tropical to cool subtropical and temperate regions.
