QUESTION
This is my Euonymus ‘Tom Thumb’ hedge that I think is infested with soft scale. I’ve sprayed twice in February with Conguard and Confidor. The infestation is much worse in the hedge around the weeping elm. What would you recommend?
ANSWER
Your hedge is badly infested with scale and drastic action is required. I recommend pruning the hedge back by 30 per cent and spraying weekly with OCP's eco-neem for a month. Also, feed with Neutrog's Sudden Impact for Lawns and water in with a seaweed solution to encourage quick leaf and stem recovery. The scale may have laid eggs deep in the branches, which are likely to hatch between November and January, so I suggest another round of eco-neem spraying during that period.
