Q: I heard you talking on radio recently about Grevillea ‘Molly’ being better than G. ‘Robyn Gordon’. What does it look like and why is it better, please?
Peter M., Penrith, NSW
A: I discovered ‘Molly’ in John Elton’s native garden in Coolangatta, Shoalhaven NSW, and in Mal Johnston’s ‘Boongala Native Garden’ in Kenthurst, Sydney. Both experts preferred ‘Molly’ with its larger, deep red blooms that had a showy glossiness about them.
'Molly’ grows 2m tall and wide and flowers year-round. However, if you trim it back after a flush, it will rest for six weeks before bursting back into bloom. Bees, birds, butterflies and other insects love the nectar-filled flowers. Also, ‘Molly’ is bushier, more compact with denser foliage than ‘Robyn Gordon’ and ‘Ned Kelly'.
