Mealybug
QUESTION: We have several African violets all group together inside. They all flowering well and look great but this one has developed these white spots on the leaves and flowers. Can you please advise what the problem could be?
KEVIN H., ORAN PARK, NSW
ANSWER: Mealybug is a common insect pest of African violets. It is often caused by overcrowding plants, high humidity, excess fertiliser, and excessive moisture which encourage the insect.
Control measures include avoiding these factors, as well as gently touching the insects with a cotton bud soaked in methylated spirits or diluted vinegar. Spraying insecticide increases moisture levels, which worsens the problem. I recommend sprinkling Richgro Bug Killa Granules on the soil and watering them in well.
