Stranger things

Q:
Our gum tree has a strange growth on it, what is it and how do we treat it?

Peter and Kristy J., Port Macquarie, NSW

A: This is sadly not a good sign for a relatively young tree. It is commonly called a bracket fungus and indicates that a fungus disease has been living inside your tree for some time and decided to leave by developing an ‘escape mechanism’ in the form of this woody structure.

There’s no remedy for this problem. To prolong the life of your tree, apply Bushtucker fertiliser to moistened soil around the dripline every three months during summer and autumn and water in with Popul8. It’s not a control but a health tonic to assist the tree compartmentalise the disease and extend its life. Be prepared to ultimately remove the tree in time.
