QUESTION
I’ve had minimal success with native rhododendrons. Are there any tricks? This one I photographed at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney is growing happily in the ground.
ANSWER
Success with native rhododendrons, also known as vireya rhododendron, can be hit or miss, depending on the variety. Most hybrids do better in cool to warm temperate climates. Grow them in a moist, shaded spot with excellent drainage. I recommend growing them in terracotta pots in coarse orchid bark or bromeliad mix. These slow growers have fine roots, so avoid repotting too often. Once they establish, they’ll reward you with spectacular blooms.
